Settlement
From visa to indefinite leave to remain
Three years to settlement under the exceptional talent standard is among the quickest routes the UK offers. It is also the clearest reason to take the choice between talent and promise seriously at the very start, when you can still influence it.
Fast-track to settlement and citizenship
Global Talent is one of the most flexible routes to indefinite leave to remain and British citizenship. Reaching the point of applying for citizenship is a long process on any route, but this one runs on noticeably more favourable terms.
It is also the clearest practical reason to take the choice between Exceptional Talent and Exceptional Promise seriously at the very start, while you can still influence it. The difference is two years of your life.

Settlement is not automatic at the three-year mark. You will need to show all of the following.
Continuous residence for the qualifying period, with no more than 180 days outside the UK in any rolling 12 months
Evidence that you earned money in your expert field while in the UK — payslips, invoices, contracts or dividends
A pass in the Life in the UK test
An English language requirement at the appropriate level
That your endorsement, or your prize, has not been withdrawn
Naturalisation generally becomes available one year after indefinite leave to remain. Partners of British citizens may be able to apply sooner.
It is a separate application, to a separate part of the Home Office, with its own fee and its own residence and good character requirements.
Requirements
What indefinite leave to remain asks for
Three years of continuous residence if you were endorsed as exceptional talent, or five years as exceptional promise
No more than 180 days spent outside the UK in any rolling 12-month period across the qualifying years
Evidence that you earned money in your expert field during your time in the UK — payslips, invoices, contracts, dividends
The Life in the UK test
An English language requirement at the appropriate level
Your endorsement, or your prize, must not have been withdrawn
The 180-day rule
The requirement that catches people out
More Global Talent settlement applications are derailed by absences than by anything else, and it is a particularly unfair way to lose three years, because the people this route attracts are exactly the people whose work takes them abroad: conference circuits, fieldwork, touring, international productions, overseas offices.
Counting calendar years instead of rolling 12-month windows. The limit applies to any 12 months, not to each year of the visa.
Forgetting that travel days usually count, and that a long research posting or tour abroad can breach the limit in a single trip.
Assuming work travel is exempt. Some absences are treated differently, but you cannot rely on that without checking the position for your circumstances.
Only starting to count in year three. By then it is too late to change anything.
Overlooking that your partner and children have their own five-year clock, which may not end when yours does.
If you are not ready
Extending instead
You do not have to settle at the first opportunity. You can extend for up to five years at a time, more than once, as long as your endorsement has not been withdrawn — the fee is £766 plus the healthcare surcharge, and you will need to evidence that you have earned money in your field while in the UK. That is the usual answer when absences have broken continuity, or when someone simply is not ready to commit yet.
Afterwards
British citizenship
Naturalisation generally becomes available one year after indefinite leave to remain, subject to the residence, good character and knowledge requirements. Partners of British citizens may be able to apply sooner. It is a separate application to a separate part of the Home Office, with its own fee.
Settlement and nationality rules are detailed and change; this page is general information as at September 2026, not advice on your case. Confirm the current requirements on GOV.UK, and take advice on absences well before you apply rather than after.
Planning ahead to settlement?
If you are choosing between talent and promise, or worried about absences, it is worth a conversation now rather than in year three.
