Eligibility
Do you qualify for the Global Talent visa?
There is no points calculator for this route and no salary threshold to clear. Eligibility is a judgement about your standing in your field — which makes it harder to self-assess, and much more worth getting a second opinion on.
The baseline
What every applicant needs
Everything below has to be true before the field-specific criteria come into play. If one of them is missing, no amount of evidence in the others compensates.
You are at least 18 years old
You work in academia or research, digital technology, or arts and culture
You are recognised as a leader in your field, or can show you are on your way to becoming one
That recognition can be evidenced from outside the organisation that employs you
Or: you have won a prize on the Home Office's list of eligible prestigious prizes
Switching
Applying from inside the UK
If you already hold a valid UK visa you can usually switch to Global Talent without leaving. Student visa holders must have completed their course, or have studied full-time for a PhD for at least 24 months. While a switch is being decided you must not travel outside the UK, Ireland, the Channel Islands or the Isle of Man.
You cannot switch from any of the following — these require applying from outside the UK:
A visit visa
A short-term student visa
A parent of a child student visa
A seasonal worker visa
A domestic worker in a private household visa
Immigration bail
Permission to stay granted outside the immigration rules
Self-assessment
Where people misjudge themselves
Reading "leader in your field" as "senior in your company". They are different claims and only one of them is being assessed.
Assuming a PhD or a long publication list is itself qualifying. It is evidence, not an argument.
Ruling yourself out because you are early-career. Exceptional promise exists precisely for that, and it is a real endorsement, not a downgrade.
Ruling yourself in because your employer is well known. The assessment is of you, not your logo.
Missing that a fellowship or research grant you already hold may qualify you for a two-week fast track.
This page summarises the position as at September 2026 and is general information, not advice on your case. The definitive source is GOV.UK together with the published criteria of the body that would assess you.
Which route
Four ways onto the same visa
Three go through an endorsing body in your field. The fourth skips endorsement entirely. Picking the wrong one costs you months, so it is worth getting right before you write a word.
Academia and Research
Researchers, academics and fellows. Four separate ways in, three of which are fast-tracked because the assessment has effectively been done already.

How it works
No endorsing body — you apply directly
Talent or promise
Two standards, and the difference is two years
Every endorsement is granted under one of two standards. You choose which one to apply under, and the choice is a judgement about your own record. Aim too high and you are refused; aim too low and you wait an extra two years for settlement.
Exceptional Talent
You are already a recognised leader
Your standing in the field is established, not emerging
Recognition comes from outside your own organisation
Your work is cited, exhibited, deployed, awarded or built on by others
You are the person other people in your field point to
Exceptional Promise
You are an emerging leader, early in your career
The trajectory matters more than the total
Evidence is recent and moving in one clear direction
You have begun to be recognised beyond your immediate team
The judgement is that you are on your way to the top of the field
Worth knowing: exceptional promise is not a consolation prize, and endorsing bodies do not treat it as one. A well-argued promise application from a genuinely emerging leader is far stronger than a stretched talent application from the same person. Choosing the standard honestly is the first piece of strategy, and it is the first thing we look at.
