Global Talent visa questions, answered

General information based on GOV.UK and endorsing-body guidance as at September 2026. It is not advice on your individual case, and the rules change.

The basics

No. That is the defining feature of this route. There is no job offer, no sponsoring employer and no minimum salary. The assessment is entirely about your own record.

You must be at least 18. There is no upper age limit, and no requirement to have lived, studied or worked in the UK before.

Up to 5 years at a time. You choose the length when you apply, and you pay the healthcare surcharge up front for the whole period, so there is a real cost to choosing five years.

Either, or both. You can be employed, change employer without telling anyone, be self-employed, run a company, freelance, or hold several roles at once. Professional sportspeople and coaches are the main exception across UK work routes.

There is no English language test and no maintenance funds requirement at the visa stage for most applicants. English is required later, at settlement.

Endorsement

An endorsing body is a UK organisation with expertise in your field that the Home Office asks to assess you. Academia and research goes to the Royal Society, the British Academy, the Royal Academy of Engineering or UK Research and Innovation. Digital technology goes to Tech Nation. Arts and culture goes to Arts Council England, which works with RIBA for architecture, the British Fashion Council for fashion design, and PACT for film and television.

Exceptional talent is for people already recognised as leaders in their field; exceptional promise is for emerging leaders early in their careers. You choose which to apply under. Talent leads to settlement after three years, promise after five.

It depends on the body and the route. In academia and research, the three fast-track routes usually get a decision in about two weeks and the peer review route in about five. Other fields publish their own service standards, which change — check the body's current timescale rather than relying on what someone was told last year.

You must apply for the visa within three months of the date on your endorsement letter. Miss that window and the endorsement cannot be used; you would have to start Stage 1 again.

Yes, if you have won a prize on the Home Office's list of eligible prestigious prizes. Those applicants apply directly for the visa in a single stage. The Home Office will usually verify the win from public sources and only asks for evidence if it cannot.

There is no right of appeal against an endorsing body's decision, though a review may be available in some circumstances. In practice the realistic path is a stronger fresh application, which is exactly why the strategy and evidence work matters before the first submission, not after a refusal.

Evidence

For digital technology, no more than ten documents in total, each up to three sides of A4, with at least two supporting the mandatory criterion and at least two each for two optional criteria. The same document cannot count twice. Other fields set their own rules — check your body's guidance.

Established experts in your field who have known your work for at least twelve months, and ideally who sit outside your own organisation. A letter from a well-known figure who barely knows you is weaker than one from a credible expert who can describe your work in specific detail.

For digital technology, up to three sides of A4, covering career history and publications. Write it for an assessor who has never heard of your employer or your job title.

Recent evidence carries more weight, particularly for exceptional promise, where the whole argument is about trajectory. Timing your application to sit just after a significant piece of recognition is a genuine strategic decision.

The visa application

The Home Office fee is £766 in total — £561 for endorsement and £205 for the visa — plus the immigration health surcharge at around £1,035 per adult per year of the visa, paid up front. Each dependant pays £766 plus their own surcharge. Confirm current figures on GOV.UK before budgeting.

Usually about three weeks if you apply from outside the UK, and about eight weeks from inside. Priority services are available at extra cost in many locations.

Usually yes, if you already hold a valid UK visa. Student visa holders must have completed their course or studied full-time for a PhD for at least 24 months. You cannot switch from a visit visa, short-term student visa, parent of a child student visa, seasonal worker visa, domestic worker visa, immigration bail, or permission granted outside the rules — those all require applying from abroad.

If you are applying from inside the UK, no. You must not travel outside the UK, Ireland, the Channel Islands or the Isle of Man until you get a decision.

A valid passport or other identity document, a tuberculosis test certificate if you are from a country where one is required, certified translations of anything not in English or Welsh, and written permission from your sponsor if you have held a UK government or international scholarship award in the past twelve months.

Family and settlement

Yes. A spouse, civil partner or unmarried partner of at least two years, and children under 18, can apply as dependants. Each pays the £766 fee plus the healthcare surcharge. Dependants can work and study, and can apply for settlement after five years.

After three years if you were endorsed under exceptional talent, or five years under exceptional promise. You will need to show you earned money in your expert field while in the UK, pass the Life in the UK test, meet the English requirement, and have spent no more than 180 days outside the UK in any rolling twelve months.

Yes. You can extend for up to five years at a time, more than once, as long as your endorsement or prize has not been withdrawn. The extension fee is £766 plus the healthcare surcharge, and you will need to evidence earnings in your field.

Generally one year after receiving indefinite leave to remain, subject to the residence, good character and other naturalisation requirements.

Working with us

No. Nothing on this site takes a payment, and there is no checkout anywhere on it. Every enquiry goes to a person, and any fee is agreed in writing with you before work starts.

An adviser reads your profile against the criteria for your field and comes back to you, usually within one to two working days, with a straight answer on which route fits, which standard is realistic, and where your evidence needs work. There is no charge for that and no obligation.

We will tell you, and we will tell you what would change the answer. A refusal on a premature application is worse for you than waiting, and it is not a cheap mistake to make twice.

Yes. Immigration advice and services in the UK are a regulated activity, and ours are provided by IAA-regulated advisers. Our registration details are published in full on this site. We are not affiliated with the Home Office or with any endorsing body.
